Thick curls of smoke rose into the air, blanketing everything in grey. The hungry flames were barely visible through it and Mal was beginning to understand the true meaning of the word ‘suffocate’.

It wasn’t something he had expected to come across when he had gone to visit Inara at the Training House. It sure as hell wasn’t something that he was liking much, either. But he was there now and nothing in the verse was going to stop him from getting to her.

Just a few days before, Inara had requested Mal’s presence at the Training House. The reason still remained unknown and so, purely for entertainment and as a distraction from his current situation, Mal made a game of guessing the reason, as he staggered towards the open doors of the building in front of him.

Did Inara invite him for business purposes regarding her shuttle on Serenity?

Mal let out a low groan as a piece of metallic debris flung out at him from the flames and hit him above the left eye, causing thin beads of blood to form and drip down the side of his dust-ridden face.

Forcing himself to keep moving, Mal pushed the pain to the back of his mind and ventured further inside into the main hall. Its once elegant beauty had diminished – flames licked at the paintings on the walls, causing the paper in the frames to yellow around the edges, then to turn brown and finally drift innocently to the floor and around the room in ash-form.

Did Inara miss him and invite him solely because she just wanted to see him?

A sudden breeze sent sparks flying and set the curtains ablaze with a fiery vengeance. Mal ducked as part of a column collapsed and fell inches in front of him. He pushed on further, until he could see the vague outline of the room in which he’d found Inara when she had been caught up in the Operative’s trap not so long ago.

He got closer and closer and closer and…BANG!

A damaged beam crashed around Mal’s feet and everything went black.
