“So tell me about this case, Mulder,” Scully prompted her partner. She watched curiously as he moved over to his desk and took a notebook and a pen from the cluttered mess.

“Well, it was a year or so before I met you,” Mulder explained, as he began to draw something on the page in front of him. “There was a series of unexplained deaths that occurred in the forest. All of the victims were marked with this symbol,” he said.

He put the pen to the side and showed Scully his drawing.

“Mulder,” Scully groaned. “Is that a mouse?”

Mulder glanced down at his drawing and then back up at Scully again. “Yes, it’s a mouse,” he told her, nodding. “Interesting, isn’t it?”

“You could say that,” Scully replied, raising an eyebrow. She sighed reluctantly, knowing that despite the lack of credibility that the case held on the latest deaths, they’d be looking into it, mouse symbol and all.

“Got any brown clothes, Scully?” Mulder inquired suddenly, glancing up.

Scully stared blankly at him and then gave a short nod. “Yes.”

“Good. We’ll need to camouflage ourselves in the forest,” Mulder explained. He turned away then, missing Scully’s scowl.

He grinned back and shook his head, reaching into his pocket as if checking for something. “Nope, they’re all here,” he replied teasingly. “Lucky, huh? We’d have had to go back to the mountains if they’d gone missing!”

His eyes lit up with a mischievous twinkle and he moved closer to Scully as she attempted and failed miserably to hide a smile.

“Yes, Mulder,” Scully replied, sarcastically. “It’s very lucky.”

“It certainly is, Scully!” Mulder quipped lightly, brushing his hand against hers.

Scully smiled resignedly. “Sure. Fine. Whatever.”
