Gwen took a mouthful of beer and swallowed it down hard, enjoying the burning sensation it caused as it swam down her throat. It was sharp, bitter, alive. She took another gulp as that laugh rang out again from the other side of the room and some girly giggles accompanied it.
She turned to stare at him. Jack. Captain Jack Harkness, leader of Torchwood, was terribly drunk – or so he appeared – and chatting up the ladies. It was unbelievable! He had asked her out for a drink after work and he was coming on to someone else – or rather, several someone else’s.
Gwen cringed and emptied the rest of her glass, slamming it down on the counter. She was certain as she did so that one of the women who had broken away from Gwen’s boss’s fan club (to get more drinks, she presumed) muttered ‘Jack’ and ‘hotshot’ under her breath. She blinked.
“Hotshot?” she found herself saying before she could help herself.
The blonde glanced her way and nodded. “Over in the corner there,” she confirmed, pointing at Jack. “He’s damn fine, but he’s made it quite clear he’d not up for anything more than a drink if you know what I mean. A shame.” She went on her way, leaving Gwen to ponder her words.
A gentle hand on her back put a stop to her thoughts and she spun around. “What’re you doing here?” she asked when she saw who it was. “Your fans get bored of you, did they?”
Jack offered her a smile and shrugged. “No, don’t worry. The fans still love me,” he told her. “Most of them do anyway. When I told them I was here on a date some of them didn’t look so happy.” He shrugged again and then gestured to the empty seat beside her.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked.
She didn’t answer and instead stared silently into her glass.
“I’m sorry,” he went on. “I shouldn’t have gone over when they asked me before. Are we okay?
He waited until she nodded before sitting down.
“You know,” he began, “I think it’s about time we cause a stir among the ‘fans’. What do you say? Do you want to set them straight with me?” he offered Gwen his arm.
“What are you proposing?” Gwen eyed him curiously.
Jack grinned and leaned in to kiss her quickly on the mouth. “Let’s go for a walk,” he said simply.
Gwen nodded gratefully and they both stood to leave. The girls across the room watched them and she let her hand wander pointedly to Jack’s waist, pulling him to her. In response, his arm encircled her shoulders as it had done so many times before. A few of the girls groaned.
“Do you think they’ve got the message?” Jack whispered in Gwen’s ear with a smirk, as they reached the door.
She grinned back at him, eyes sparkling. “I think they got it,” she agreed.
