Poll

It has been bugging me for some time which word to use: "all right" or "alright". And so here is a poll. :)

[Poll #1462991]

I use alright, but technically speaking, "all right" is correct. Like the Associated Press (which is of course the final say-so in all things grammatical, of course) says that "alright" is never correct, only "all right." *shrug*

Interesting. I've just had a look around online and that's about what I've come up with as well. Think I shall try to use "all right" in future. :) Though I suppose it doesn't matter which I use.

I use alright, but apparently "all right" is correct. So thus I ticked that, HOWEVER I'm all for 'alright' being, you know, right :D

LOL indeed. :D Thanks for that.

Lol :) Of course in fictional writing I go with 'all right' too, I thought I should mention that.

Non-fiction writing I'm all for being rebellious against what the 'man' says we should do in regards to grammar lol

Welcome :)

Lol. I shall keep that all in mind. :P

I use alright -- it's mostly habit now, even though it is grammatically incorrect. =) But meh, I spend most of my energy in the grammar department trying not to mix up their, there, and they're. LOL!

Both are correct, depending on which style guide you use, but "all right" just looks funny to me. It's not used very often, at least in what I read.

Mm yeah. I'm torn between themm really. "all right" seems to be thought as more correct from what I've seen but I always thought it was "alright". So. Hmm.

I'm pretty sure it's how you use it. My mother the English teacher would probably say "all right" is the only correct form. But she still refuses to consider "ain't" a proper word and it is in the dictionary now.lol

I use "all right" when I mean to say things are all correct. Like, how something is organized, or test answers. I use "alright" typically when someone is speaking (dialouge) or to mean ok. As in, "I'm alright" vs "This is all right to me". Unless of course, I mean things are alright (as in, how are you doing? I'm alright.).

That make any sense?lol

I always use alright, and it is now an ~accepted form~ in the english language haha. But still when writing formal things such as essays, you're supposed to use all right.

[identity profile] esprit-de-glace.livejournal.com 2009-09-28 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Alright" is nonstandard and, therefore, often colloquial. It's gained some acceptance in writing largely because people use it so often (think "people that" versus "people who"), but it's not technically correct--when I'm working, for example, I correct to "all right".

Indeed. I shall keep that in mind. Thanks.

I would say you should use alright as an adjective, and all right only as an affirmative in speech.
