“Inara,” Mal called out to Serenity’s Companion as he walked casually with his hands buried in his pockets, into her shuttle. ”Storm’s been actin’ something fierce and Wash says he can’t land us jus’ yet. Be a few hours til we can drop you off for your appoint-“

He stopped suddenly as he caught sight of Inara.

She was half naked with her back to him, a soaking wet sponge in one hand held hesitantly in the air.

“Mal!” Inara finally found her voice and turned her head to glare at the intruder. She lowered the sponge, reaching for the towel next to her with her other hand as she did so and carefully wrapping it around her shoulders with the sponge still clenched in her hand.

Satisfied that everything was covered, she turned fully to face the spluttering Captain, fire burning in her eyes. He was so going to be sorry for this!

“Uh…Inara!” Mal exclaimed awkwardly, inverting his eyes and swinging around so that he was facing the door. “I…didn’t see you there.” He paused and gulped, clearly uncomfortable about the situation he had gotten himself into. The fleeting thought that he always seemed to find trouble, no matter where he went, shot through his mind before his attention returned to the present.

Inara closed her eyes for a moment in frustration, and then opened them again. “Mal, this is my shuttle, my home! You have no right to barge in like that!” She pulled the towel tighter around herself, feeling strangely self-conscious for a Companion.

Mal nodded, unsure of what to say, and continued to stand at her door, unmoving.

An awkward silence fell, both Inara and Mal lost for words. It was Mal who regained his ability to speak first.

“I…uh…I’ll go,” Mal muttered, his face flushing red. He awkwardly combed a hand through his hair and readjusted his shirt.

Inara nodded dumbly before realising that Mal couldn’t see her. “Yes, that…that would be good,” she agreed, losing her grip on the sponge. It was too damn slippery! She cursed under her breath as the sponge fell to the ground and reached down to pick it up and place it carefully back in the tub of water at her side.

Mal took her swearing as a bad sign and glanced back over at her just as she almost lost her grip on her towel. Cussing quietly at himself for looking, he dropped his gaze, while his legs went on autopilot and finally led him towards the shuttle door as quickly as possible.

As soon as Mal was gone, Inara let out a deep breath that she hadn’t even realised she had been holding. That had definitely been too close! Her grip on the towel lessened and she let it fall limply over her still damp shoulders. She was slipping in more ways than one!
