“Mulder!” Scully protested wearily. “There are lots of deaf musicians out there! What makes you think this one is any different?” She tapped at the picture of a teenager sitting at a piano that Mulder had given her and looked over at her partner in exasperation.
The teenager was, according to the article it was attached to, 17 years old and had been deafened a year earlier in an accident where he worked. He had never played piano in his life before the accident, yet somehow had the skills of one of the most prestigious pianists alive.
“Have you read the article, Scully!?” Mulder replied excitedly, ignoring her scepticism. “He’s played for less than a year, he’s deaf and he can play piano better than some of the best! If that’s not an X file…”
“It’s a well known fact that when you lose one of your senses, your others are heightened. It’s scientifically possible, Mulder. There’s no X file here,” Scully reasoned. She handed the article back to him and walked back to her desk, dismissing him.
Sitting down, a thought crossed her mind and she glanced up to meet Mulder’s somewhat sulky gaze. “Is that really why you want to go?” she asked, cautiously.
Mulder offered her a sheepish smile and shrugged. “Well, yes, partly. It does have X file potential!” He paused and ran a hand through his hair. “And it would be nice to go, don’t you think?”
Scully raised an eyebrow, the corner of her mouth twitching up into a smile at its own accord as she realised what he was hinting at. “I think I’m starting to see it’s potential as an X file,” she played along.
Mulder grinned. “Then let’s go!”
