Goodbye was not a word either of them liked using. Generally it meant that one of them was about to put their life in danger and might not return. Regardless of the many times they’d said it and been okay, Sam was hesitant to tell Jack goodbye on this mission.
“Sit this one out,” she said. She didn’t beg it of him and she didn’t plead, but it was pretty damn close. The tone of her voice and the look in her eyes spoke volumes far louder than any words could say.
Jack leaned over and gave her a quick kiss. “I’ll be back before you have time to get a nap in,” he teased. He placed a hand on his daughter’s head and then gave her a gentle kiss too. “Our little princess here’ll surely wake up soon and keep you occupied.”
While his words were true and she had no doubt that their daughter would provide her with a big distraction from his absence, she couldn’t help but fear the worst. She told Jack so.
He, without a word, wrapped his arms around the both of them. His embrace was warm and comforting. It wasn’t comforting enough though.
“Be safe,” she said. “And don’t take any stupid risks.”
“This whole mission is a risk,” he said. When she frowned, he added, “but I’ll do everything I can to get back to my two girls.”
She nodded. It was decided; he wasn’t going to sit this one out. Even with all the danger present, he was willing to risk himself to go out and save the world. She didn’t know whether she should give him another hug and kiss or punch him. Maybe both.
“Oookay, campers,” he said, taking a gun from one of the techs and slinging it over his shoulders. “Let’s go find us some goa’uld and share our bullets.” Jack shared a look with her and then, when the chevrons locked and the wormhole opened up, he started toward the stargate. His team for the mission followed.
“Goodbye,” she mouthed to him, as he turned for a last look at them. “Come back to me.”
He saluted and gave her a nod and a grim smile. Goodbye.
