So, apparently those spam comments that are going around contain a rootkit virus. Details here. DO NOT CLICK ON THE VIDEOS IN THE SPAM COMMENTS. I'm doubtful any of you would, but in case...
*sigh* it's so annoying. Everytime i'm like, I PAY YOU GUYS TO NOT GET THIS SHIT, I'M NOT PAYING ANYMORE.. But then I'm addicted to my paid account so yeah...
*butts in* I just switched my account settings to screen all comments that aren't from friends. Idk if this will stop the little buggers, but it makes me feel better.
I've only had two bad ones, but I still don't know how I got them. They were the type that take over your entire computer and are difficult to get rid of. =/
Oh, not fun. I've had a few, but only one that difficult, on my laptop ages back. Laptop is still running despite that and age (she'll be 5 in December).
Lovely. As if getting them on my posts aren't bad enough. Not that I'd click them, but still. Ugh! I think I'm up to 40-50 at this point. So tired of them.
Yep. They're so fun. :/ Ick! Yeah, I'm about at that too, including those last week or so. Getting sooo tired of them. I'm starting to set posts at comms I get them on to friends only.
Ick. Yeah, LJ has hidden them all for me also, but I report/ban/delete each one anyway so they can't do it again in my journals/comms... And I've started f'locking posts at various comms I've posted fic to.. is sort of helping? Though not by much considering how much I've posted. :/
Well, at least they seem to have finally stopped, knock on wood. Watch LJ not even bother to make any news announcements about it (unless I missed it somehow, which is possible since the news posts stopped showing up on my f-list without my making it do so) or apologize for letting it happen to begin with.
Yeah, so far they have. (My desk is wood. Cherry wood. Such a big, heavy desk but she's so pretty. ♥)
I don't think LJ needs to apologise for letting it happen. People are idiots and LJ has no control over that. However, I agree they should've updated us with whatever they've been doing to prevent the spam. It's a bit... not great of them... to just let us deal with it and wonder if they're doing anything at all. *shrug*
Normally I might agree, but at the same time...they're supposed to be all "we promise to protect our users!" and such (weren't there even two separate/similar issues like this within the last few years? I feel like the fan fiction issue might have been their attempt to "protect" us (or maybe I'm thinking of something else) and then there was something else...maybe regarding Facebook (like the whole thing with people being able to repost entries that other people post, even under friends lock or something like that).
To me, this is a fairly big issue because it's not just one or two spam bots posting comments in Russian or something. It's a number of spam bots posting youtube videos with viruses in them. I accidentally clicked on the video the other day while I was on my kindle but it didn't play long enough to do anything (and I don't even know if kindles can get viruses o.o) So for a company that's supposed to be all "we care about our users, we want to protect them!" they certainly didn't do a good job at it. It took...what, maybe five or six days before it finally stopped? I don't even remember now.
At the very least they should definitely have updated us once they were made aware of it (and I seriously hope it wasn't my comment on the last news post that first brought it to their attention, 'cause that's just...sad) and were doing whatever they had to to put a stop to it. It's oh so very typical of them to not update us about things like this, that's what's also frustrating.
