When my mum was a kid, she got acute appendicitis, but she hid it for as long as possible so she could keep playing outside - it nearly ruptured and the ambulance came to pick her up, but her brother didn't get out of bed to see her off, and he called down as she was carried out that it was because he thought she was faking!
