She touched a finger to the back of one of the spindly spider-like creatures before her. A wistful smile crossed her features. “It knows. They all know.”
The insect made a clacking noise, impatient and insistent. Soon, it was not alone. Soon, it and River were surrounded by more of its type.
“Destroy and eat and recreate.”
The machines buzzed lightly around her, fencing her in. She watched them, knowing their game. She smiled. They advanced.
“Replicate.”
