Darkness pulled at him. He wanted to give in to it and let it take him. Without him, the world would have time to heal from all the destruction he caused it. He had literally shifted a part of the world into Hell and back. The world would be much better off without someone like him.

But instead, he woke up and the darkness crept back, lingered just out of reach as if waiting.

One day, it said. It teased.

“One day,” he muttered to himself.

He watched the darkness constantly, out of the corner of his eye, and waited for the day it shifted too close and consumed him. When that day arrived, life would become very interesting for those left behind, those still alive.

They wouldn’t stay alive for long.

The darkness always returned.

Always.
