An arrow shot through the air, whizzed past, and stuck itself in Mal’s side. River fell to her knees as Mal’s pain hit her, and it gnawed away her defences as quickly as the arrow embedded itself under Mal’s skin. Her initial scream wavered into a whimper.

Mal staggered and nearly fell, his eyes wide. “Wha-?”

“A dark archer,” she managed. “The time wasn’t right, so they sent him from the future to save this city.”

“What?’ Mal said again. “This isn’t a city.”

Before River could answer, a hooded figure revealed itself.

Mal reached for his gun and fired.
