Course Info Session - My 1st Trip To QUT
Feb. 1st, 2008 11:43 pmI had a course information session at QUT (Kelvin Grove) yesterday. Here's a quick (or maybe not so quick) look at my day...
Morning...about 6-6:30am
I made the mistake of staying up until 1am the night before and so only got 4 hours of sleep before I had to get up. I had a nectarine for breakfast, had to shower faster than I've ever showered before, phone the bus company to find out when the next bus was and then walk the 10 or so minutes down to the shops where the bus-stop is. Ten or so minutes later, at 7:30am, I got on the bus. It cost $10 for a daily ticket! (I really need to get my student ID soon! Should be much cheaper!)
1 hour and a half later
I finally arrived at the QUT busway, after hearing 30+ songs on my iPod while riding the bus. Of course, it took me about 5 minutes to realise that I had to take the stairs UP to get to QUT rather than go out the side. *ducks head* Shoulda been obvious, but hey! I've never been there before - and I worked it out eventually. That's gotta count for something.
The next 30 mins
In the next 30 or so minutes, there was a lot of walking and looking at campus maps (I have a new love for those maps. seriously.) to find out where to go. If there hadn't been other people there looking for the same info session, I'd have wandered the campus for the entire day as I forgot to bring my invitation letter which had all the info on it (like where to go). I ended up following said people to the correct location.
The following hour or so
The guy, Professor Adrian Thomas, explained the course structure and so on. I decided, from what he said, the specifics of my course (or rather, I locked in - mentally - the major/minors I was considering - although I had already enrolled in the units the week previous, thanks to
dierevolutionar). Major: Creative Writing. Minor: Television. And either a second minor, this one in Web Design, or several electives including some Web Design units and a unit in Virtual Communities that sounds awesome.
The next 30 mins
Q&A's. I found out that the course structure I picked works out fine. Another I was considering (Major in C/W and Major in Web Design) would have to be approved - and it would have meant not being able to do some units I want to do), so I discarded that one.
The next 30 mins to an hour
I'm really not sure how long it was (I'm guessing it was between 30 mins and an hour), but after the Q&A's, I left...and promptly got lost. I took a wrong turn somewhere. It ended up being not so bad to start, as it led me to the toilets (which I was intending on looking for anyhow), but it got increasingly bad when I continued on from there. I walked for aaages, doubled-back several times and finally found the bus-way a lot later than I should have had I gone the same way back as I'd gone in.
The bus-way & Chermside & another bus
Rather than catching a bus back home (that wasn't an option anyway), I got one in to Chermside (30 or so mins, I think it was) and wandered a bit there. I tried some clothes on, bought a pair of 3/4 pants (I ♥ 3/4 pants - I wear them all the time), bought some incense at My Spirit (awesome shop!), grabbed some donuts (which I bagged for later) and went in search for another bus.
The other bus
I caught the 680 bus back to the shops - another 30-40 minute ride. The entire time, my eyes were burning and blurring from lack of sleep and I had to blast music to stop myself from falling asleep. (Lesson learned: no late nights when I have uni early!) I stumbled home from the bus-stop after that, got inside around 3pm and finally ate the donuts I bought earlier - which made me feel so much better and more awake (and I remembered then, that I hadn't eaten a thing since about 6:45am. Second lesson learned: remember to eat).
I snuck online to check my emails quickly (mum and Thomas were out, so the fact that it was Thomas' day for internet didn't really matter - they'll never know) and after that...well, I fell back into my usual ritual which I won't go into details about (sleep, dinner, DVDs, more sleep pretty much covers it). And that's about it.
My first trip into QUT ever - alone or otherwise - and I got lost. It was rather refreshing, though. It's good to get out of the house again. With the holidays, I've been at home a lot. So yes...that was my Thursday.

Date: 2008-02-02 04:13 am (UTC)Honest to god, I've been carrying several campus maps around with me for the past three years and still managed to get lost fairly regularly.
Thank god my new degree is external. Now I get to combine two great things - getting mail and information pamphlets! Woot!

Wow. That's...probably going to be me in the next while. Need to print out a map, actually. (Or do they give them out on orientation?? *ponders*)

Awesome! That'd be great!!
