Haunted.
That was the only word Monica could think of that fully explained the look on her partner’s face as he re-lived the disappearance of his son. His eyes said it all: cool and blue-grey and so terribly pained with the refreshed knowledge that Luke would never be returned to him.
She was certain he was taking aboard the same blame he had when it first happened. He had always taken so much to heart in the time they’d known each other, and while Monica usually found it endearing, today it was heartbreaking.
It made her heart ache to see him so miserable and had there been anything she could have done to take away his pain, she’d have done it. As she stood by his side, it was all she could do to not reach out and put her arms around him and comfort him.
Instead she watched him as tears welled up in his eyes. She studied the stubble that had grown on his face since she’d last seen him. He hadn’t shaved in weeks. His right eye was badly bruised, likely from a fist fight, as was the rest of his face.
However, nothing was as harsh as the haunted look in his eyes. It was a look she knew she would never forget for the rest of her life.
Taking in a deep and calming breath to collect herself, Monica took action as a gunshot brought her back to the present. Life was moving on and it was time for them to join it.
They could deal with their own personal nightmares later.

Loved the characterisations because they seem so true to the two of them. The haunted look, the misery, the worries. It just fits. :)
