“Ching zie lie ee-bay Ng Ka Pei?” Mal asked the bartender, as he leaned drunkenly over the bar from the stool on which he was perched. He watched silently as his drink was prepared and reached for it gratefully the moment it was placed on the wood-top counter in front of him.
The bartender barked out a price, extending his hand expectantly for the coin. His hand was rough and calloused; the hand of a hard worked labourer and it was obvious that he had been on the job for some time now. His immediate impression was that of a man who wouldn’t take crap from anyone, least of all a drunkard like Mal.
Mal, who had already drained half his glass, finished sculling the liquid down and slammed the empty mug down onto the table with a grin. “Sure thing,” he said, the words running together slightly. He began to rummage through his pockets to find the required cashy money.
Fishing out several of the coins, he slowly counted out what he believed to be the correct amount and pushed them across the bar. Then he pushed a few more coins over, just to be sure. The bartender grinned. “That should do it,” he said.
Behind them, Jayne was trying vainly to chat up a fine looking woman dressed in silks not unlike Inara’s. In fact, when Mal had first seen the woman arrive, he’d thought her to be the Companion. Black waves of silken hair cascaded down over her shoulders and her eyes were the deep honey brown of cocoa.
She looked very out of place in the company of Serenity’s mercenary yet at the same time it was as if she belonged nowhere else.
Mal didn’t realise that he’d been staring at the woman until she suddenly appeared by his side, a carefully constricted smile on her face. She took a seat next to him and ordered up a sophisticated-sounding drink that Mal had never heard of and then turned her attention to him.
“It’s a good evening for a night out, isn’t it?” she enquired politely.
Mal nodded. “Sure is.” He smiled back at her with as much respect showing on his face as he could muster. With the amount of drink that he had consumed so far, it wasn’t much. “Might I ask what a beautiful lady such as yourself would be doing her all alone at this time of night?” he slurred. “It’s a mite dangerous, is it not?”
The woman laughed. “Thank you for your concern but I’m quite alright. I’m meeting with someone, in fact.”
Mal felt a weight of disappointment drop in his stomach. “Oh,” he said. “I’ll jus’ let you get back to that then.”
He was rewarded with a wide smile. “My daughter. I’m meeting with my daughter,” the woman said in explanation. She glanced up as the front door was pushed open and the sound of twinkling bells rang softly, barely audible over the conversational drone of the bar. Mal followed suit.
“That’s her now,” the woman told him, smiling and waving as a younger woman entered.
Mal gasped. It was Inara.

Oh, and expect more of this soonish. I have plans. (Yes, I really do! And I'm like Mal when it comes to plans, for the most part!) Soon.
