River cowers in the corner, hands covering her face, elbows pointing straight down at her lap and knees pulled up not quite to her chest but far enough to make her figure look a lot smaller than it actually is. When Simon finds her, she is swaying back and forth slightly. Her eyes remain wide open and her mouth is the shape of an ‘o’.
“River? Mei mei?”
“Ninjas,” she murmurs. “The ninjas came and they took it all away. Nibbled on the nuts. Left nothing but traces.”
“Ninjas?” Simon tilts his head to the side and puts on one of his best confused expressions.
River nods. “Ninja squirrels.”
Frowning, Simon takes a step forward. “River. There are no squirrels and definitely no ninja squirrels on board the ship. I think maybe that-“ Something scurries past him and he falls silent. He looks at the animal and then back at River. The animal hurries away, underneath River’s bed. “I think Serenity has squirrels now,” he corrects himself.
“Ninja squirrels,” River confirms with a sharp nod. “There’s one in your bag.”
“How did they get inside?” he asks.
River looks at him vacantly.
“You know what? Never mind.” He slowly turns his gaze toward the bag he’d left on the end of his bed earlier. For a moment, nothing seems out of place. And then it moves. Simon gulps. “So, River. By ‘ninja’, please tell me you don’t mean psychotic, fighter squirrels.”
River only smiles and continues to rock back and forth.
