The water was deep, churning. It was like it had a life of its own, complete with body and limbs; the limbs included especially thin but strong fingers that were relentless in their mission to pull anyone to cross them beneath the surface. It was dark. Hopeless.
Even so, he kept on struggling, fighting for air and feeling around for any sign of Elizabeth. The water stretched on endlessly.
Bits of seaweed dragged past his legs and arms. Other debris sent chills through him: Just how much crap was floating in the oceans around Atlantis, anyway?
There was nothing human there, nothing warm. Darkness that was impenetrable as it was deep made certain that his search was a lost cause.
He would find nothing there. Elizabeth was lost to him.
He continued his search.
