Our internet has been turning off and on again once or twice every minute. As such, til this settles and it returns to normal, don't expect to see much of me. I'll try and save your entries for later.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Folks, I know you're tired of me yelling at you, but you should be aware that there's a hearing this morning being held by the US House Judiciary Committee on a "copyright" bill that will essentially break the entire internet.

You like the internet, right? I mean, you're here.

From the link above:

As drafted, the legislation would grant the government and private parties unprecedented power to interfere with the Internet's domain name system (DNS). The government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users' attempts to reach certain websites' URLs. In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates.

It gets worse: Under SOPA's provisions, service providers (including hosting services) would be under new pressure to monitor and police their users’ activities. While PROTECT-IP targeted sites “dedicated to infringing activities,” SOPA targets websites that simply don’t do enough to track and police infringement (and it is not at all clear what would be enough). And it creates new powers to shut down folks who provide tools to help users get access to the Internet the rest of the world sees (not just the “U.S. authorized version”).

This is being framed as an attempt to fight hackers and pirates. Don't buy it. And don't think for a minute that it's going to stop there. This is bad. And at the hearing today, only one opponent of the bill is being allowed to testify.

Please do whatever you can to fight this. Email congresspeople. Sign petitions. Yell about it in every venue you can.

Wireless is set up and actually working! Much exciting. :D

Note: Internet was working fine before. It's just wireless we were having issues with. But all fixed there now, and it's actually allowing us to have a password so we can use it. :)

It's a 1,200 word report (with an additional 300 words on reflections on the process of online collaboration using the wiki platform). The following are some topics I can choose:

+ Communities, norms, etiquette and ethics
+ (Dis)embodiment and virtual worlds
+ Governance of virtual worlds
+ New media and security
+ The monetisation of social interaction
+ Collective intelligence, hive minds
+ Networks and swarms
+ New media and political change
+ New Media literacies
+ Cloud computing
+ New Media beyond the First World

I'm leaning toward one of the first two listed, but not certain yet. Thoughts? Ideas? Relevant information or links or videos? I require the usual "academic sources" for this one.

Has anyone else been having issues with MSN lately?

Mine wouldn't let me open it earlier until I restarted my computer. Just then, it closed on me for no reason and again, is refusing to open. :/

+ Iron Man 2 was epic! ♥ Saw it yesterday with Luke S. Have been fangirling like crazy since, especially over Tony/Pepper (Pepperony?). XD

+ Need to get on DVD as soon as possible: Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Star Trek (2009).

+ My email inbox is overflowing! If I take awhile to respond, it's because I'm trying to stay afloat or drowning in emails. Or sidetracked by watching TV eps.

+ Show of the moment: Psych! I'm nearly all caught up with it. Been marathoning like crazy.
